A sugar friendship is a warm, enjoyable experience between two adults. The connection deliberately stays at a surface level, focusing on fun and comfort without real emotional depth.
The sugar-friendship concepts resonate strongly with Gen Z and millennials who grew up on social media. This is a place where maintaining dozens of online connections feels friendly without going too deep.
According to The Cigna Group’s Loneliness in America 2025 report, 80% of Gen Z respondents reported feeling lonely in the past 12 months, compared to just 45% of Baby Boomers. Gen Z reports the highest loneliness classification at 67%, followed by Millennials at 65%, even though both generations are far more digitally connected than older age groups.
Youth are inclined towards friendships that don’t feel pressured and make the environment light with mutual benefits.
This friendship adheres to a different type of connection where both enjoy each moment during that sugaring friendship.
