Human trafficking is one of the most widespread and devastating criminal activities globally. The National Human Trafficking Hotline (NHTH) defines human trafficking as 'the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit individuals for commercial sex acts or labor.' In the U.S., anyone under the age of 18 engaging in commercial sex is automatically considered a victim of trafficking— whether or not force, fraud, or coercion is involved.
Trafficking can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, or socioeconomic status. However, some individuals are more vulnerable. The NHTH’s 2019 Data Report highlights that women are disproportionately affected, and minors face a significantly higher risk of being trafficked.
In 2019, the NHTH recorded over 11,500 trafficking cases, but this is only a fraction of the issue. The Counter Trafficking Data Collaborative, the world’s first global trafficking data hub, reported over 108,000 cases in 2020, with trafficking incidents spanning across 164 countries.
If you believe you or someone you know is being trafficked or if you have information about trafficking, please reach out to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. For immediate danger, dial 911.
To report trafficking to federal authorities, call (866) 347-2423.
